Metta: Loving-Kindness Meditation

The original name of this practice is mettabhavana, which comes from the Pali Language. Metta means ‘love’ (in a non-romantic sense), friendliness, or kindness: hence: ‘loving-kindness’ for short. It is an emotion, something you feel in your heart. Bhavana means development or cultivation.

Metta is an easy to learn powerful and practical meditation especially suited to beginners. Through the practice of Metta we learn to generate Love for ourselves and all others. The practice of Metta changes not only the practitioner but those that the practitioner welcomes into the practice.

In this workshop we will first learn to sit well. If the meditation seat is not comfortable and stable the practice of any kind of meditation is difficult. The participants will be taught how to sit in a way that is specific to each student.

An overview of the practice of Metta will be presented and the participants will be guided through the beginning stages of the Metta practice.

There will be time for discussion after the guided practice that will include how to make Metta part of your daily life. There will be handouts that describe how to practice Metta on your own.

If you have them, please bring a meditation cushion, Yoga bolster and a few Yoga blankets. If you already have a seated practice please bring whatever you normally use. Suitable support will be available for those that do not have any.
