In any art, we need something to say and we need a way to say it. In this class, we will explore various writing styles with the goal of finding the voice that best expresses what we wish to communicate.

In the first session, the participants will be led through a series of exercises in which they practice writing in different voices. The goal will be to cull out what works and what doesn't, stretch beyond usual habits, and to help each writer develop his or her own unique perspective. Writers will be invited to take home what they have learned and write a piece in the voice they have chosen.

The second session will consist of participants reading their week's work, followed by discussion. The intent of the discussion will not be to critique the work but rather to explore the process.

It is hoped participants will come away with an enhanced sense of their writing styles, and if nothing else, some inspiration to kick their writing into the next gear.

What to bring:

  • Writing materials (whatever you are comfortable writing with: pen & paper, computer, etc.)

  • Thesaurus (optional)

  • A clear, non-judging mind

tuition: $10 - $40 sliding scale

The link to the Zoom meetings will be sent out to attendees before the workshop times.

About the instructor:

Music and writing are Paul Chasman's life blood. A lifelong professional guitarist, Paul has always carved out time to write as well, following the same process in his verbal creations as he does while playing and composing. He has written a satirical novel, "The Book of Bob," and is currently immersed in writing a sequel. For eighteen years he has written satirical "letters of advice and constructive criticism to the famous, the infamous, and the current administration" under the alias of Carl Estrada. He posts his letters along with their subsequent replies at www.thecarlletters.com. (No, Trump never replies.) In 2012, after many years as a mute guitar player, Paul began a new career as a singer/songwriter He has since released three CDs of his songs.
