Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge
Open year-round, the Oaks to Wetlands trail is located on the Carty Unit of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. The trail starts out as a graveled and then paved walk past the Cathlapotle Plankhouse and along a small lake. Then the trail crosses uneven terrain as it enters newly restored open oak woodlands. The unit is home to songbirds, woodpeckers, wintering waterfowl, and more. A $3 parking pass is required, payable on site with cash.
Dress for weather and bring binoculars (or let us know if you want to borrow binoculars). Bring snacks, lunch, water, whatever will keep you happy for the morning.

About the instructor:
Longtime birder and teacher Laura Whittemore loves to show beginners the tricks of the trade. She has taught classes for Audubon Society of Portland and previously worked for Backyard Bird Shop, where she helped bird-feeding enthusiasts ID those confusing little brown birds. Laura holds a BA in Biology from Lewis and Clark College and has traveled in the US, Australia, South Africa, and Antarctica in search of birds.
