Working from photos or from life, create forest sunset studies and paintings through our shared step-by-step sequence. Begin by carefully mixing colors that evoke the deep dark greens of a forest at dusk, and the warm corals, pinks, oranges, and reds at sunset. We’ll paint wet into wet, lay down glazes of watercolor to build luminosity, and experiment with capturing the calligraphy of trees against a glowing sky. We’ll also look at the powers of complementary colors, and how dark greens when contrasted with pale reds and pinks intensify radiance. Forest gestures and details will be added towards the end of our process with ink, gouache and colored pencil. Painting forests at sunset is one of my favorite activities, and I look forward to sharing this process with you!
