An Introduction to Wild Pigments: Connect with the Land through Foraging and Paint-Making

Instructor: tilke elkins
Tuition: $10 - $20, sliding scale
22% of this workshop’s tuition proceeds will go towards supporting efforts to Rename Lane County in Recognition of the Kalapuya Sovereignty.
Would you like to connect with the land through the materials you use in your creative practice? This introduction to wild-found mineral, botanical and waste-stream-derived foraged pigments presents an opportunity to combine ethical foraging and land stewardship with the preparation of art materials you can use every day.
You'll be provided with a simple list of materials to gather and have with you during the class. Artist and founder of Wild Pigment Project, Tilke Elkins, will:
discuss the cultural history of pigment use in Oregon and Washington
describe guidelines for ethical foraging practices.
demonstrate several different ways to prepare pigments, useful for both watercolor and oil paint, from rocks, soil and clay.
touch on the basics of ink-making and show participants how to make a deep blue ink from blackberries.
Come prepared to follow along, or just take notes for later.
